Each year, an artist is asked by the event chairs to donate their time and a piece of art to represent the Luau & Longboard Invitational on t-shirts, posters and other materials.
The artwork is auctioned at the Luau. All proceeds are donated to the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
Luau 20, the 20th Annual Luau & Longboard Invitational, proudly announces the selection of Pete Cabrinha as the 2013 Event Artist. While Pete’s art has attracted buyers from across the globe, he is a world-class waterman with top in class achievements in big wave surfing, winsurfing and kiteboarding. We are not only honored to have Pete support Luau 20 with his original artwork, but he will also join us as a Legend in the
Surfive. 48 x 48 inches Mixed Media on Wood
The inspiration for the piece titled Surfive comes directly from the event in which it was created for: Luau 20, The 20th Annual Luau & Longboard Invitational benefit for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. For many of us, surfing is simply the way we ‘live.” It’s the way we calibrate our lives against the day to day business of ….. getting to the next day.
The title is a reference to the idea that we surf to survive and it doubles as a metaphor for the event’s mission….. to raise money and awareness for a cure through surfing. The message inscribed on the piece is a not so subtle call to action using the words Surf (to) Live.
